Unit 1: Objects that Move & Collide

Big Idea: Use academic language and mathematical thinking to analyze how forces and energy affect an object’s motion

Unit 1 Vocabulary – check out this page for the unit vocabulary and definitions

Unit Standards:

  • PS2-4: Gravity
  • PS3-2: Potential Energy
  • PS3-1: Kinetic Energy
  • PS2-1: Newton’s 3rd Law & Collisions
  • PS2-2: Newton’s Laws

MS-PS2-4 – Construct and present arguments using evidence to support the claim that gravitational interactions are attractive and depend on the masses of interacting object.

MS-PS3-2  – Develop a model to describe that when the arrangement of objects interacting at a distance changes, different amounts of potential energy are stored in the system.

  • Learning Objective: I can use a model to describe how an object’s position above the Earth affects its potential energy.
  • Formative Assessment: Roller Coaster Poster (with group)
  • Summative Assessment: Roller Coaster Quiz

MS-PS3-1  – Interpret graphical displays of data to describe the relationships of kinetic energy to the mass of an object and to the speed of an object.

  • Learning Objective: I can describe the relationship between kinetic energy and mass, and between kinetic energy and speed, using graphical displays of data.
  • Formative Assessment: Kinetic Energy Graphs worksheet
  • Summative Assessment: Roller Coaster Quiz
